Today I went Great White Shark Cage Diving. I can't tell you what possessed me to do that, but it was fun. Especially once I was out of the water! We saw four whites and another shark that I didn't catch the name of.
I spent the previous day getting to the dive site and saw a few sights along the way such as Cape Aghulas. I spent the night in the Great White Guest House in Gansbaai, South Africa.
My tour began with a good breakfast at the dive office. Then we walked to the dock and got on our boat. We headed out to the dive site, which wasn't too far off shore. There are always great whites around there because there are always seals there. Seals are breakfast, lunch and dinner for great whites.
We took turns getting into the cage which had been tied to the side of the boat. They threw a fish head in the water as bait, along with other tidbits of salmon to tempt the sharks. When they were spotted, the operators yelled, "Down, down, down!" We took a big breath and dunked under the near-freezing water. Truthfully, the view was much better from the upper deck, out of the water, but I did see several sharks swim in front of the cage.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience because I will never do that again! But it was exciting!
